THE MAYORALTY.
Mr Davies 1 Candidature. A meeting of the friends and supporters of Mr William Davies was held at the American Theatre last night to take measures to secure his return as Mayor. There was a good attendance of gentlemen from Grahamstown and Tararu, over 50 persons being present, which, considering the fearfully inclement weather, augured well for the interest felt in Mr Davies' candidature. Mr Edwin Binney *as called to the chair, and after the secretary (Mr L. Melhose) had read the minutes of what had been done in the formation of a committee and allocation to certain districts of canvassers, Mr Binney explained that the object of the meeting was to invite the co-operation of Shortland residents in the work, to add the names of those who were favorable to Mr Davies' candidature to the Commjftfifi. and to appoint them to certain to canvas the burgesses. Mr Oldrey thought Mr Davies should explain his views on the foreshore and other matters, but he was ruled out of order by the Chairman, as the meeting was called for a specific purpose. It was also stated that Mr. Davies would call a public meeting before the election, at which he would be prepared to answer any questions regarding his conduct in the past and his views on the future. Messrs Blott, Macnab, Butt, Adlam and Cribb spoke in favor of Mr Davies candidature, and the meeting seemed to be unanimous in his behalf. The remainder of the business consisted of an examination of the roll and the appointment of committee men to canvas the district. About twenty names were added to the Committee. •. A vote of confidence in Mr Davies was passed unanimously, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman for presiding concluded the businesgv V
