PRICE OF MILK.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star)

Sic, —I would not have troubled you with any correspondence on: >lie 'milk question ifiAVFair Play's " letter had been treated fairly* Jbut'this<is not the case, for where he distinctly mentions two cows as giving 13 quarts your correspondent has it that one gives that quantity, which shows 1 mOsre- thanF, dbublfe profit. Of ""Enquirer'' will" refer to VRidhC" letter in the Advertiser a short time /ago ron -the same subject he will find tljat hevgivesi about the same average as " Fair Play " does to each cow. " Enquirer " states that 13 quarts of milk at 4d, deducting, 2s 6d for fodder, leaves 3s Id per'day, which in three months will pay for the cow, allowing her to cost £12. In-;t!ie first place, I cknnot see how- lip can make it come to 3s Id,- or how in three months it will amount to £12. I think if Enquirer would reckon it up a little-more carefully he will find he has made a great mistake ; or, perhaps lie could tell us by what rule of arithmetic he has arrived at the &bove ; even if he was correct I would ask how'he expects a man to live, for by bis reckoning he only allows enough to keep the cows and pay for them, nothing for losses in cattle, labour, and bad debts ; I think it is he that is trying to make the public believe black is white.

According to his rule of reckoning he could easily make out that the Thames Milkmen are obtaining money under false pretences, but:according to my way of reckoning I cannot see it, nor.-any one else that has had anything else to do with it on the Thames, for the " proof of the pudding is in the eating."—l am, &c,

Ajjxious Inquikeb
