THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Thames Borough Council -was held yesterday evening in the Council Chambers. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Councillors, Renshaw, Macnab, Ehronfried, Gibbons and Wilson. ."■■:' The minutes of the last meeting,,and special meeting, were read and confirmed. WAIO-KABAKA. BOAD. A letter was received from the manager of the City of London company informing the Council that the company would contribute, .£2O , the. repair of . the WaioNEarata Boad; as- requested. Referred to the Works Committee with instructions to act. POLLEN STREET. A letter was read from Mr Wilkinson drawing attention to the dangerous state | of the planking on the pathway at' the corner of Willoughby and Pollen streets. Referred to the Works Committee with power tjxact. TO BATE. An objection was read to a rate.of £2 being levied on his house by Michael Hogan of the Fountain Hotel. The objection could^ not be entertained for the present. BE .WATER SUPPLY. i A letter was read from the associated Highway Boards, acknowledging receipt of the Council's last letter. APPLICATIONS FOB WATEB SUPPLY. Some applications to have water laid oa various premises were read. Referred to the Water. Committee with power to act. : ■■, WILLIAMSON STBEET. A letter was read signed by several persons drawing attention to the state of the' drain from the Theatre Royal to the Beach/and requesting that the urinal be removed so as' t6 obviate the chance of a malignant fever setting in, which the petitioners thought in hot weather-would be very likely to bbcur. Referred to the Works Committee with power to act as fart as the drainage Wai concerned, the said committee to report ,on the advisability of removing the urinal.; ■' ■•■/■ ■ ■■• ::■ ■••■•■. .•■ - -;-■ iV; . TABABU PATHWAY. A letter was read from the dwellers on the north side of Tararu creek requesting the Council to form a foot-path sq as to enable them to obtain access to their dwellings. * t Referred to the Works Committee. TABABU TBAMWAY BENT. A letter was read from Mr Soateron behalf of the Tramway Company, asking the Council to remit the rent of the tramway (£2O), and stating that though much money had been expended, and great expense incurred in repairing the sea-wall, the undertaking had been un-. successful. It transpired that two years' rent was due. After some discussion it was agreed that the Town, Clerk take a bill for three months for the money due,, and that the amount due for.rent be remitted, them. ••.:•:: DISMISSAL OF A SEBVANT. : A letter was read from James Jackson asking the Council to reconsider thejr decision concerning his''-'dismissal, atfd to continue to employ him even if it were necessary to do do so at a lower rate of wages, as he had ever been a faithful servant of the Council. ■, ; .... : The Mayor explained that at present there were numbers of names on the books as applicants for work, many of them with large families, and that they were obliged to divide the work by allowing each man to work for a fortnight or so. Cr Ehrenfred thought that as the man had been a faithful servant of the Board for four years it was hardly fair to dismiss him to make room for others. After some discussion, during ? which the Town Clerk intimated his willingness to subscribe" towards the services of an office boy", the matter dropped. , >'■ ' ■■•'•■ ? VALUATION; A letter was read from the valuer (R. M. Clark) informing the"Council that the valuation return had been completed, and drawing, attention to the amount of time which had been expended in the compilation of it, and asking that the same be taken into consideration in the . way of "increased remuneration. Resolved that the Town Clerk be instructed to inform Mr Clark that the latter part of his letter could not be entertained, as the. work had been taken by tender "'■•-' ■ •■' •■- ■''■■' LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH BIiPOBT A'letter was read from Mr J. B. Mason, Officer of thetLocal Board of Health, informing the Council that eight deaths had occurred i'n^tlie: Borough during the past month. Three of these were from diphtheria.,"Aiso that two actions had been maintained. The report drew.the attention of the Council to the fact that'sheep, which died at sea, were dressed,-as if for food, at the Tararu Slittighter Yard. The Mayor sajd that if the officer; had any gr6uqjj|Lt6 go on, he ought to follow this, mattering. . : . Report ordered to be received. BEFOBT, OF FIBE BBIGAKE '■ COMMITTEE. The report of the Committee appointed to confer • with Fife Brigade Committee was read and adopted, and payment of items contained therein authorised to be made. BEPOBT 03? CEMETERY COMMITTEE. The report of the Cemetery Committee was read. Along discussion arose as to whether it was more advisable to make a road up to the cemetery, or to spend the money in making a pathway in the cemetery itself. Cr Renshaw was in favor of the latter, stating it was necessary in. order to open up the cemetery, while Crs Ehrenfriedj Gibbons and Macnab were of opinion that the road to the-cemetery was of paramount importance on account of the great difficulty of getting there. The Mayor thought that as the best parfc.of>the, cemetery-ground had been already used, the better plan would be to get a piece of ground in some other locality where » cheaper; road could be made. The cost of a road to the top of the cemetery, he, estimated at £1000 at least, and for less than this sum he considered a suitable piece of land for a cemetery could be procured. .. .. _ .-■-- • . Cr Renshaw thought that the estimate of £1000 was excessive. m Cr.Ehrenfried thought itunadvisable to ' hive two cemeteries.
