THE WEEK.

The event of the week was perhaps the opening of the now battery atTairua for the Prospectors. ' Though a tmatifpetirlr this little plant will be most' useful^m testing, the reefs which seem to, abound in Tairua, and as long as the stuff' from the mine continues to be as rich* as the first parcels Jested, the return from-the four stampers should be considerable. Considering the difficulties which had to be surmounted in taking machinery' *fb Tairua.it is matter for congratulation that a battery, however small, has been erected and started in five monthsirom .theJield being proclaimed. The Caledoiafan"iaine has caused some little stir in" our midst this week by .turning out very rich stone. As thiß was got from the Cure reef in a portion of the ground but little worked; it has improved the prospects of the mine. The reef did not show any such richness in the Cure ground, although a?;good payable lode, and it,looks as jf a, good shot of gold had been hit' in the Caledonian, and not merely a patch specimen stone. Two sad accidents' haw occurred this week—they seldom come singly It is really time, that^mor*,<ptrch. ing inspection was carried out. ltui'Teared that too many of these casualties happen through carelessness. Some .miners will not use the precautions which are believed to be absolutely necessary- to entrap safety, and hence the frequency of accidents. The Tairua gold yield from about four tons crusnecl*"iHi said to be 130 ounces of araalgam r and yet the crushing is represented as likely to yield 30 ounces of gold to the ton. This is manifestly an error. It was not expected that the stuff would average so much. Mining matters have been very quiet generally, but the gold returns are respectable. The items in detail are as follow :—

The Bright Hjule will h^ldoTsr^ their retorting tttt the month's run is up.'• /'I The Cbown Pbincess will retort in the early part of the week.
