OLD WHAU.
\ Crushing for this Company is continued at their own mill with good show. The manager, Mr Scott, is now busy with that portion of the mine near, the surface in the vicinity of the old shaft. Large blocks were left at a former period containing a portion of Dixon's. No. 1 lode, and which returned handsome yields, but owing to the delay consequent upon litigation, and the consequent, flooding of that part of the mine, the work was not resumed till lately. The water being now effectually draiued off by the low adit and the still lower workings in Dixon's ground, the manager has been enabled to enter upon and rise towards the surface contiguous to the old shaft, and has now a drive in from whatinay be termed the 75 feet level, but in reality to the apex of the hill is over 100 feet; a very large portion of the reef or crushing stuff is available, and will be much readier worked as soon as an old drive from the horse road is cleared out, enabling a winze to be sunk on the workings, thereby securing ventilation as well as a pass for quartz. The whole of the stuff is passed down below and brought to the mill along the engine level.
