THE WEEK.

Will be necessarily brief to-day, although if space were ayailable a great deal might be said of several most encouraging indications in some of the Thames mines, which hare had the effect of bringing into notice on' Change some stocks which hare been remarkable for their absence from the quotations for a long time, or named at such a price that it only helped to put them further in the shade. That premier mine the Queen of Beauty has paid another handsome dividend to its fortunate proprietors, and the appearance of the workings is such as to favor the belief that there will be no falling off for a long time. Its neighbor the Bright Smile has been kept well employed putting out stuff for the large new battery so recently started. The latter has answered expectations in every way, but everything about it being new it will be some little time before_results arc seen in the shape of large yields of gold. The mine has shown quite a revival, a large parcel of specimens being comeupon where little expected. A slight accident the other day delayed operations at the mine for a couple of shifts, but the damage was promptly repaired and operations. are eoing on again favorably. Caledonians Bare come to the fore, and are now en-

quired for at prices much above those mentioned in connection with this once famous stock during some months .past. The Cure and Golden Calf are both in favor—not without reason, as those mines have recently developed new features of a most promising character. Tho New Exchange has been successfully started with every prospect of an improved future. With judicious management and prompt payment of calls for carrying on progressive works, the value of this piece of ground ought soon to be discovered. At Ohinemuri in two directions arrangements have been made which when perfected ought to place that district amongst the goldproducers. Now that there is a certainty of capital being invested, the auriferous resources of Karangahake and Waitekauri will be proved. Tairua is progressing, but slowly, all the work being done, with the exception of the Prospectors', being of a primary nature. If machinery were available that district would coon tell a different tale. The gold returns for the week annexed show up pretty well. Only a porlion of the Queen of Beauty's yield appears, the first lodgment having been included in last Saturday's week. Coromandel contributes a quota, and in a few days there should "be a better report of this portion of the field, as the Tobatea -and other mines appear to be on gold. The Bank of New Zealand shipped over four thousand ounces this week, making a total weight of bullion sent to the head, office of nearly 28,000 ounces during four months last past. _j
