April 14th. Mr Belcher has been returned for the South Western Province over Wynn. The Catholic hierarchy have found occasion to rejoice at this result, and aunounce that every election will be contested in favor of a chango in the Education Act. Java and the Straits settlement and Fiii will be represented at the Melbourne exhibition in August. M. B. Carroll, one of the members for Ararat, has been arrested for some extensive forgeries. ' The Victoiia Eacing Club have instituted a champion stake for .New Year's Day— a sweepstake of 25 soys. each with 1500 soys. added; three miles ; weight for age. H.M.S. Sapphire has arrived at Adelaide, and the Eosario has sailed for England. SYDNEY. April 16. ' The revenue returns for the quarter show an increase. In the Assembly the Postmaster 1 General stated that the Government paid Hall £3200 more than he earned in the Californian contract, but expected that .New Zealand would pay the half if a permanent service were established. Nearly two thousand Chinamen Have arrived at the North Queensland diggings, aDcl eight thousand more are at Hongkong. Plenty of gold coming in, but fever is preralent and. the blacks troublesome.
