Auckland, This day. The Scholarship report of the Board of Education places Skeen, Parawai, top of the list with 436 marks. A barque, supposed to be the Edith Rose from JNew York, is signalled. Wellington, Monday. Two cases of refusing to pay toll for Mail Coaches was tried this morning— Everest v. Hastwell and Thompson r. Young. Judgment, with costs, for tollgate keeper in each case. ! Wanganui, Monday. A determined attempt at murder took place last night. A man named Igo entered the house of a labourer named Woods, who was sitting on his doorstep reading; and struck him on the head with a tomahawk. He then rushed into the house, saying he would kill everybody in it. A policeman heard the noise and arrested him. Igo declared he meant it. The case has been remanded by the Resident Magistrate, Woods being too ill to attend the Court. Igo's wife is said to be living with Woods. Lyttelton, This day. Arrived: Waimate, 87 days from Gravesend, with 363 immigrants. There were three births and eight deaths on the voyage. The single girls were landed yesterday.
