ACADEMY OF MTTBIC. The Thames Magnet Variety Troupe gave an entertainment in the above theatre on Saturday night. The members comprising this troupe have attained great proficiency for amateurs in the kind s of performances to which they have severally devoted themselves. The entertainment was rendered still more attractive by the assistance of Mr W. H. Heed, who is well-known to be a great local favorite as an able musician and comedian. This gentleman performed two or three local songs, which were well received by a fair audience, who, indeed, were thoroughly appreciative throughout. The athletic feats were performed in such a manner as to call for commendation. Messrs Scott and Eeddy performed very well indeed upon the flying rings—though it was perceptible that the rings had been suspended too low to admit of free action for the performers. Mr Anderson as a tight wire-walker also succeeded excellently. And the same may be said of the horizontal bar feats by the Brothers Hunter. Several comic songs were given. Mr Blake appearing twice in this character. Mr G. Keed danced the Rattlesnake Jig in a manner highly creditable, and Messrs Eeed and Hurfit gave great satisfaction in the perfomance of a double song and dance—" I really shall expire." The programme was concluded with the representation of a farce entitled " Circus Dick," in which several members of the troupe appeared.
