STAR TELEGRAMS

PER ANCLQ-AUSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.

Departure of the Governor.

A ttcklakd, 12.30 p.m. Sir James Fergus son left this morning per Mikado. Thero was little ceremony, owing to the shortness of the notice. The city, from an early hour, was gay with flag 3; the shipping in harbour particularly showing well. His Excellency left Government House at 9.30, and was accompanied down the wharf by Sir Geo. Arney, Dr Pollen, Bishop Cowie. Sir Donald McLean, Colonel St. John, Major Campbell, The Mayor and Corporation, Captain Daldy, Chairman of the Harbour BoardV'and several others. The Volunteer parade was a failure, owing to the short notice. Before embarking the Mayor made a short speech, regretting such a sudden departure. He alluded to Lady Fergusson, and although she was not present he trusted the farewell would be taken as a genuine manifestation of good will. In conclusion he wished him God speed. In reply Sir James Fergusson thanked all present for their kindness on gathering at such a short, notice to bid him God speed. He regretted the suddenness of his departure, and had intended to await the arrival of his successor to render his advent easy and useful ; but had found that instead of helping, he would by remaining hinder and inconvenience both his successor and the public. He had always found the people of this colony kind and generous, arid did not require that such an opinion should be confirmed by that manifestation. He expressed his indebtedness to the public men of the colony for their kindness during his stay. It had been his pleasure to watch their disinterested efforts for the good of the colony, which oughttobe proud of them. To all classes he was grateful for the expressions of regard, and hoped to see a speedy development of the greatmaterial wealth with which Providence had blessed the country. No man who had been in the colony could be more assiduous for, or desirous of its welfare than himself. No opportunities or talents i should be lost for advancing its interests. (Three cheers for Sir James and three for Lady Fergusson were g>ven.) Sir James continued to say that he had known his successor over 20 years, and had sat in the House of Commons with him. Pie believed he would be useful to the colony, and felt sure he would receive a hearty welcome. He called for three cheers for the Marquis of Nornianby, which were heartily given. His Excellency then went aboard the steamer Devonport, which steamed off r to the Mikado, the artillery firing a vice-regal salute from the Breakwater. The Mikado weighed anchor as soon as Sir James arrived on board. Dunedin, This day. At a meeting of the City Council held last night a proposition to purchase the Gasworks was negatived, but it was agreed that if the lessees would supply meters, a two years'. contract would be entered into, provided the price to private consumers did not exceed 12s 6d per thousand feet. FROM CORRESPONDENTS. Tauranga, This day. ; Mr, W: Kelly, M.H.R., addressed the electors last evening. He denounced provincialism as another word for neglect of out-districts; the money was principally expended in Auckland and suburbs. When the question of abolition was before the House nearly all opposing the measure wore Provincial Government members. (Mr. Kelly received a unanimous vote of confidence).
