4 .ABOUT THOSE APPLES. A f.w days a^o we published a short j article from the South Australian Advertiser with tho above title. It gave some ingenious " calculations" of tlio number of apples consumed by our first parents. A correspondent of the Ballarafc Star has gone a bit further —has put the cap on the others, we think. The correspondent, writing from Creswick, and signing himself " C.8.," says : —I have just accidentally come across your issue of Thursday last, and have been greatly interested in ah extract from the South Australian Advertiser, concerning the number of apples from the forbidden tree which were consumed by A dam and Eve. The editor of the South Australian Advertiser makes the total number 820,364, and he has got nearer the mark than any of the others. But, from calculations that I have just been making, I have discovered that he, too, is incorrect. It has been taken for granted, that when Eve tempted Adam it was the first time she had been at that apple tree. It is a great error, as I will clearly prove. Eve be-48124-taste of the knowledge of good and evil spoken of by the serpent. Thus it will be seen that Eve alone ate 48,124. Various motives are ascribed to Adam for taking the " lion's share" of the fruit; but they all are wrong, I will now give his true reasons which, to any unprejudiced individual will be conclusive. Eve did not make a secret of her first folly, but frankly confessed to her " better half" what she had done. Adam, when lie heard her statement, was, to use a vulgar phrase, " knocked into a cocked hat." He could not sleep a wink chat night (although there were no fleas in those days), but, unlike many of his male descendants of the present day, he determined to bear part of Eve's burden of woe and partake . of the apples. So Adam, early next morning, be-4681210der his lore to Eve, to palliate and to share the penalty of her sin of disobedience. It will therefore be I seen that the total number of apples con- I sumed by Adam and Eve were 4,729,334.
