The division la»t night in the House of Representatives on the Premier's abolition proposals, with such an unexpected result, has rather taken the wind out of our tails. The meeting this evening will most likely assume a different character to what might have been expected if it had been held before ;the division on Mr. Vogel's resolutions. Yesterday we suggested confining the business of the meeting to the narrow limit of approving the resolutions as the " beginning of the end." Circumstances alter cases, however, and the meeting will be perfectly in order in putting in a word for the district in regard to increased representation, as well ai approving the, proposals of the Premier just carried with such a large majority. To get up a healthy agitaon.the subject of .representation will be right and proper now; if attempted while the proposals were still under debate it might possibly have embarrassed the Government, and it could not pos-, sibly have done any good. But although ■the Premier's resolutions have been carried—after a hard,, fight—real work will follow in the House; and it is to such districts as the Thames the Government must looik for supporters in carrying through the House a measure to provide machinery for superseding the condemned Provincial system/ Upon
this Bill a great deal will depend. If a good beginning be effected no regret will ever be felt at the death of Provincialism; and to secure a good beginning will be best effected by extending a more liberal franchise to districts which have so long languished under the administration of Provincialism. , The adjustment of the representation is therefore, par excellence, the consideration, now that the abolition of Provinces principle has been affirmed.
