THE WAIOTAHI.

Yesterday morning the reef had been sunk through ovt-r 5 feet without tlie wall having been met. The stone, as the reef is worked on is increasing in density, ■and -is.more thoroughly impregnated, with* baser minerals, and gets more of the character of that so'rich in gold obtained in the Manukau. The new, or No. 2 shaft, in which this reef has .been sunk, is about 60 feet above the bottotn, or chamber of the No, 1 or engine^ihaft. I thought it possible that the mine manager would, when he had struck the reef in No. 2, have driven from one shaft to the other, but I find thafc such is not his present intention. The reef in N No. 2.has evidently been . struck in its underlie; the plans shew that most distinctly. A drive had been previously put in at the bottom of the engine or No. 1 shaft, following what was called the 3ft. reef, and i bearing away towards tho company's

boundary on tho town side. This reef ran out, and the present manager continued the drive, being guided only by the cleft in the country indicated by a wall. From what I can gather the fortunate discovery in the Manukau led to a more perfect survey of the Waiotahi ground. This survey proves that the cleft country that had been driven on, on. speculation, was pointing to the underlie of the Manukau reef, and that the end of tho drive is now within 15 or 20 feet of cutting the same jeef as in No. 2 shaft, the drive being in splendid country for working. This drive is to the south-west of the Engine-house.
