THE OLD WHAU.

Mr. Dakin informs me that he has continued a drive in towards the Alburnia boundary, which he intends carrying in for 50 feet, and from it will start a rise from the hanging wall to the main reef. The old pass will not be abandoned as it is the manager's intention to keep it open for the purpose of using it as an air shaft, and also to drain the water away from the upper workings—about all it is or ever was fit for. I refrain from saying anything on the reefs in the mine, preferring to judge for myself as to their appearance when I see them. The present manager, I understand, has had a tough job to keep the old winze from coming together, it so badly wanted limber.
