ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib,— The " Yankee notion of raising tbe wind for religious purposes is to be eclipsed by the 'action of St. George's choir, who have intimated their intention to give concerts,, followed ,by what is termed by the irreverent, "an ecclesiastical, hop," to get money to start a bazaar for the benefit of the funds of St. George's Church. Now I, for one, deprecate the course to be adopted, as repugnant to; the feelings of any churchman; and, it does not reflect any credit on the churchwardens (who rejoice in the addition of B.A. or M.A.. to their names) or their inferiors, the vestry. This Ido know, that many elr.u'chinen are annoyed at the management of the Church, which has been the means of bringing it into, dis-
repute, and driving members therefrom. Recently, high-flown and legal-looking documents, signed by the churchwardens (without theß.A. or Af.A. to their names) ! have been served on the staunchest 1 friends of the church, telling them that if the rent fo" their seats is not paid up I they will be declared open for selection by anyone else. And as these notices in some instances have been served on those friends to whom the church is indebted, it looks very much like trying to drive them from the congregation,' arid.' thereby leave the church wholly and solely for the benefit of those who would make it as the Temple in our Lord's day was made by the Jews. Those who used their endeavers in tho past, and would in the future, had they been allowed, to place the church but of debt, have been ignored; and those who organise questionable means for raising money are patted on the back by the churchwardens; "get money—but get it honestly if you can." I hope this will havo the effect, with your aid, of making some change in the management of the church; and place men on it who will not do anything to forfeit the respect and confidence of the congregation.—lam, &c, Churchman.
