A PLIMSOLLIAN QUERY?
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sir,—A case that was looked forward to with some interest by the seafaring men at the Port of Thames was to have come on for hearing this morning at the Resident Magistrate's Court. Eumour has it that four men were on Tuesday last marched off to the police station for having refused duty on board the brig Drover now lying in our harbor; th© reason they refused duty being, it is alleged, that the-vessel is unseaworthy, From the newspaper reports I learn that the charge against the men was withdrawn by the complainant's counsel, and the men were discharged. Allow me to,inquire if it would not have been within the province of the magistrates to hare asked why the charge was abandoned by the Captain of the Drover^ and why the men refused duty; Some facts might then have been elicited which would perhaps have been satisfactory to the insurers of the vessel. At all events au enquiry could do no harm, because if the Drover is not seaworthy she ougiit to be condemned} if she is a good sea-g*ing vessel, the men were wrong, and they ought to be punished. If Jack ashore is in danger of an accident in the mines, his safety is sharply looked after ; and I don't see why the safety of Jack afloat is not of equalimportance. • SCHNAPPEB. Thames, July Bth.
