THE GOLDEN CALF.
There is no work being, carried on in this mine other than sinking the main shaft, which is now down 302 feet, but the. water has been very troublesome. Canvass cartridge has still to be lised in blasting. The country through which the shaft is being sunk is .water-tight, and is still wet. Stopihg'had to be discontinued consequent on the great inflow of water, which was attempted to be puddled back; During the sinking of the shaft a six inch leader was cut through, rubbly in character, and carrying a great deal of -prater. This leader caihe in from Kelly's" side of the Moanatairi Gully. Some of the stone shews rich gold ; not in flakes, as was the case in the clay formation, but ribboned, or banded, as the Thames ;folk- term it. This new leader may possibly index something good below the last level, especially after gold being found so freely in the clay.. Th^ ground all round that is owned by the Golden Calf Company is juat so npanyjacres of mysteries, which the continuance oohe tunnels now being driven, by the Pumping Association would, materially assist to solve. The Golden Ca f is not alone in this matter. $he Hazelbank, Central Italy and;[several; other companies would have a: perfect trial far, and below present, lowest: levels. It would be far better so, as the money expenditure now;incurred,'.and that .has been fof the last six years, would be diverted into other mining, channels if. the ground was .proved valueless ;; but if such reefs were found in the ground as, i^ould proVe payablei a'great impetus would be given, such mines through which they runV How would it be if a confederated company were to be .formed by those owning ground on the "Just in 'Time side of the Moanatairi,; and carry^on the present low level tunnel tliat is being put in by the. United .Pumping Assochtion at their 400 feet level? Oould it not be carried on either from the branch striking towards the^ Albion vor that towards Tookeys"?.;;;;;;:.,; 1;;;;:^:^";;.; V.: ;/;" ; .;
