Captain Shimminds desires to express" hisappreciation of the kind treatment he has experienced from all parties at the port of the Thames. He represents' the Thames Eivei* saw tnills. as offering every facility, for taking s in 'cargo, plenty of deep water and good holding ground; he also is of opinion that a very little! outlay would tenable vessels of large tonnage to discharge cargo at Xararu or Grahamstown.and that the Newcastle coal trade could be brought to a profitable result.- Captain; Shimminds- is so well pleaded with the Thames and its -people that he will, if possible, visit this port again as soon as sufficient inducement • offers.- The Lady; Emm a; is. a vessel of considerably larger tonnage than the vessels which generally visit this port, perhaps her captain's favorable report will induce others to follow. The timber on board is mostly kaihekatea, not kauri. It appears from the skipper's "report that busines is* very brisk at the saw mills, Maories as well as Europeans being employed. He was much amused at the quick sightedness of. the former; it seems by.some mistake a lot of kauri had been placed on a truck ; a native saw it, and promptly gave information that that timber' was for a church to be built on the Thames River, arid they could By no'iriea&s part #itn any of the material.
