BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.
The weekly meeting of the BoTough Council was held last night in the office of the Council in Queen-street. There were present —the Mayor, Crs. Ehren- , fried, ienshaw, Anthony, Butt, Kilgour, and Wilson, j The minutes of-the ksfc meeting were read and confirmed. - LETTERS. The Cleric read a number which had been sent since last meeting of the Board •—one with reference to tiie foreshore for the Municipality to the Hon Julius Vogel; one to Mr O'liorke, askiug for his support in getting the foreshore ; and also letters to the Auckland Provincial Councillors, with reference to the Thames Water Works. TItE MAYORS TITI/E TO A J.P.-SHIP - It was resolved, after some discussion, , that application should be made for the Mayor's appointment as a Justice of the . Peace for tbc Colony. TAKABTJ CEMETEEY. A letter was read from Mr E. L. Millett, asking to he relieved from the positien of sexton to the above cemetery. - Mr Uenshaw thought that as the burials at'the Tararu ground were so few, the man at the Parawai cemetery could do all the business for the present, until oilier arrangements could be mado; and Mr . Wilson was empowered to make arrangements for the Tararu Cemetery in the meantime. - COLLECTION OF KATEF. A- letter read from the Collector of Hates —Mr Fleming—stating that he had collected up to date £'43 16s 3d. HAKUOB •VVOKKS. . A l?ttcr was read from Mr Bagnall, M.P.C., with reference to the Town Council taking charge of the harbor. The letter stated that from enquiries which Mr Bagnall had made he thought ih> power of the Council.should extend over the harbor. It would be necessary to extend the limit of the foreshore so as to take in tlio wharves, &c. ■ . MORE IETTERS. A letter was received from residents in Bolleston-street asking for an improvoi raent to the footpath of the said streetA memo, of the matter was made. A letter from Mr Goldwater, complaining that he had been repeatedly disappointed on one day when endeavoring to obtain an interview with Mr DeAn, caused considerable discussion as to the time at which the office of the Council should be opened. It was decided to give three days'.notice of a special meetr ing to consider the matter, and to appoint a regular time for office hours. . ENDOWMENTS. ■ The Clerk read the report of the committee appointed to inquire into the probable endowments of the Borough, and the adoption of the report was carried on the motion of Crl Anthony, seconded by Cr. Renshaw. x N PUBLIC WOEKS. The report of the Public Works Committee was read, suggesting the immediate undertaking,of certain works. With reference to the metalling of the Tararu lioad, the Mayor said the Government Engineer had stopped operations. He (the Mayor) had supposed it was usual for the Government iv such cases to give a little notice. Cr. Ehrenfried thought it was inadvisable to trouble the Provincial Government too much about amall matters, as by continually nagging they might lose their good will in larger matters. Cr.' Anihony said that in Princesstreet,., Dunedin, the, Government maintained the road independent of tho J3orough, but that was a country road, for. country traffic.
. It was ultimately agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayo.*, but not to make any appeal through a letter, i The Clerk read over the estimates of the Committee for the different works recommended to be executed. It was decided to adopt the Committee's report with reference to the metalling of the roads, with the exception of Tararu road. The Mayor said he did not think it advisable to put any metal on that road as he had seen the Engineer, who had promised to put men on again. He had taken the men off the road without any authority from head-quarters. It was decided to advertise for tenders for , 500 yards of stone. KARAKA CULVERT. With reference to a letter' from the Kauaeranga. Board regarding the construction of a culvert in. Karaka Road, a motion was passed referring the matter to the Public Works Committee, and the Engineer to be ordered to inspect and report upon the matter when tenders could be advertised for. HAPE CREEK BRIDGE. A deal of discussion arose upon this matter being brought forward, the Coun- | cillors being divided as to the best mode to be adopted, whether it was advisable 'or. otherwise,- for the .-Municipality Parawai Board to jointly apply to the Government for one third of the cost incurred in the construction of the Bridge. A motion was carried to the effect that the work should be undertaken—the Parawai Board to bear half the cost. POLLEN-STREET FOOTPATH. . If; 'was agreed that the Council would pay half the cost of making this footpath —on the west side of Pollen-street, near Mary-street. The residents to pay the I remainder. Cr. Kilgour moved that the sum of £25 for ; improvements of .Eichmond-street should be included in the other works decided upon by the Council. . Seconded by Cr. Butt. Cr. llenshaw moved an amendment for the postponement of this matter's consideration until nest meeting. Or. Ehrenfried seconded. The original motion was carried by a majority. ;- BRIGHT SMILE PLTJJIE., The application of the Bright Smile Company to erect a flume on trestles'was acceeded to. . VOLUNTEER PIRE BRIGADE. There was a long discussion on this subject. ; ' ... Cr. Ehrenfried thought that before the Council bound themselves to take over the maintenance, they should have some definite arrangements as to obtaining the charge of the appliances. It was decided that the report should be received, and that that portion of it recommending the formation of a committee to discuss the matter be adopted, the committee to consist of Crs. Anthony., Rensbaw, and Wilson.
