BOXING
CLARKE TO RETIRE (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. “I have quit the ring. I have fought my last fight and am leaving for Sydney on Sunday,” said Bobby Clarke, the Australian middle-weight boxer, who was defeated by Bos Murphy last night. In making this announcement to-day he said he was making no excuses for his defeat, and considered Murphy a grand fighter, but he had reluctantly come to the decision because of defective eyesight. His trainer, Pat Connors, said Clarke had suffered from desert blindness contracted when with the R.A.A.F. in Egypt in 1940. He had worn glasses after his discharge, but had later discarded them. The trouble did not affect him in the daytime, but it was clear that he was not measuring his distances when under the glare of the ring lights.
