£11,500 RAISED

R.S.A. Building Fund A total of £11,500 has been raised for the building of the R.S.A. club rooms. This fact was announced oy Mr A Bell (president of the South Canterbury Returned Services’ Association) at a complimentary social given to helpers in the recent citizens’ carnival in aid of funds for the building of the club. Mr Bell congratulated the helpers, stating that he knew that they did the work voluntarily without expecting thanks. The carnival had not produced the amount they had hoped for, but that did not affect the position; it only made the executive more appreciative of the work done. It was harder working against the current than with the stream. The chairman of the Citizens' Carnival Committee, Mr P. B. Foote, endorsing Mr Bi ll's remarks, said that the various committees had worked hard against understandable public apathy in work concerning the war now that the war was over. It was regretted that the amount, had not been raised, but. it certainly would be. The committee's efforts would continue until the club was clear of debt. A belief that citizens would still complete the job and that the club would be clear of debt, was expressed by Mr C. H. Shackoil. in congratulating the voluntary helpers.
