Mr P. W. Young, vice-president of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, will leave to-day for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Advice has been received in Timaru that the Hon. Solon Low, Minister of Finance in Alberta, will be visiting New Zealand in the interests of the Social Credit Association early next year. Miss A. M. Dewar, who headed the list of passes in the Public Service examinations for shorthand typists, received her primary education at the Timaru West School. She enrolled for the Commercial course at the Technical High School and later attended classes at the evening school. The recently-appointed clerktreasurer to the South Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr A. L. Kirk) will begin his duties on Monday. The clerk to the Levels County Council (Mr G. B. Bird) has been acting as clerktreasurer to the Board, and the Council yesterday received from the Board an expression of appreciation of the “invaluable services" of Mr Bird during the stages of development of the Board’s initial activities.

The County Commissioner (Sir Joseph Ward) announced yesterday the appointment of Mr Jack Ernest Barnard, of LeCren Street, as District Commissioner for Boy Scouts of the newly constituted Scout district of Timaru, Washdyke and Pareora. Mr Barnard is well known in the district and has been connected with the Territorials since 1911. He returned from the last war with the rank of sergeant. During this war he was a captain at Burnham Training Camp and is still a member of the First Battalion, Canterbury Regiment. He is secretary of the North End Golf Club and of the Ex-Machine Gunners’ Association.
