Judgment by Default.—ln the Timaru Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., gave judgment by default for the Premier Cash Order Co. against W. D. Barnes for £5/16/6, with costs £l/11/6.

Marist Pupil’s Success.—<Vord has been received that John Cooper, of the Marist Brothers' School, was successful in gaining a boarding scholarship in the recent St .Bede’s College Scholarship examinations. His parents are Mr and Mrs Cooper, 5 St. George Street. Other pupils of the school were highly commended in the same examination. They were in order of merit Dona Dickens and Ronald Angland.

Debit Reduced.—Beginning November with a debit balance of £5136, the Levels County Council has entered December with a debit of £2071. During last month receipts totalled £5206. the principal items of which were £2662 from main highway subsidies, £1470 advance on rate subsidy, £533 for maintenance of boundary bridges, and £358 from rates. This left a credit balance of £7O, but accounts passed for payment yesterady amounted to £2141.

Next Saturday’s Cricket.—The following is the draw for the junior cricket matches to be played at School Park, Timaru, on Saturday:—High School v. Timaru, St. Patrick’s v. Star. In the senior division, the series started last Saturday will be completed, Timaru playing Star at Fraser Park and Old Boys playing High School at the Rectory Ground. If wet weather should make the grounds unfit for play, the postponement committee of the South Canterbury Cricket Association will make its decision at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning. Timaru Licensing Committee.—The business of the quarterly meeting of the Timaru Licensing Committee yesterday was completed in one minute, only one application being under consideration. Mrs E. F. O'Leary (Mr W. D. Campbell) was granted a transfer of the Empire Hotel from Mr S. G. Mitchell, who has been acting as temporary licensee for Mrs O’Leary. The chairman of the committee (Mr G. G. Chisholm) presided and there were present Messrs A. S. Bird, J. P. Newman, D. McLennan, J. J. Heasley and D. Grant. Senior-Sergeant S. King represented the Police.
