TAKING OF CENSUS

In norma! times the census is taken in New Zealand every five years. The first interruption in the sequence was caused by the abandonment of the census proclaimed for April 21, 1931, because of the economic depression. The census was taken in 1936 but, as a result of the Second World War and its effect on the population, no census was taken in 1941, the necessary legislative sanction being provided by Section 36 of the Fihance Act, 1940. The effect of this section was not necessarily to eliminate the 1941 census, as was the case with the census to have been taken in 1941. The section authorised the census due in 1941 to be taken in any year not earlier than 1941 and not later than 1945. Accordingly the census was taken on the night of September 25, this year, but servicemen and women absent from their districts were, of course, not included.
