ADULT WORKERS

Minimum Wage Bill

(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 4. Two new Bills were introduced by Governor-General’s Message in the House to-night. The Hon. J. O’Brien said the Minimum Wage Bill established minimum wage rates for adult workers from April 1 next. The rates are: On an hourly basis, 2/9 for males and 1/8 for females, with equivalent payment for piecework; on a daily basis, £l/2/- for males and 13/4 for females; on a weekly basis, £5/5/- tor males and £3/3/- for females. The Bill provides for under-rate workers and apprentices. Mr Mason said the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Bill provided for an organisation to supersede the Maori Councils Act. Those Councils in some parts of the country had not shown great vitality, and the new organisation would follow closely the lines of the Maori War Effort Organisation. ‘
