LOCAL AND GENERAL

Housing Loans.—At the quarterly meeting of the R.S.A. on Monday it was reported that the Rehabilitation Officer stated that the maximum housing loan for ex-servicemen was £l6OO. This should have read £l5OO.

Technical College.—Results of the junior ticketwriting examinations for pupils of the evening classes at the Timaru Technical College were as follows:—Junior: First class, G. C. McEwing, L. G. McKenna. Second class, Joan B. Applegarth, F. K. Davison, A. R. Murray. Third class, I P. Joyce, J. Patricia Ryder.

Depredations b.Y Eels. —The body of a wild duck was found in the stomach of an eel trapped in the Ohape Creek and the legs of ducks were found in pels of only six pounds weight, said Mi S. Goddard at the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society held at Temuka, in emphasising the toll taken of fish and game by cels. The sons of Mr C . Haw'kins had been operating eel traps in the Ohape for a number of years and averaged 400 eels over a mile of water each season. Plenty of people would be glad to operate traps, but the difficulty was in getting the netting.

Interhouse Sports.—At a meeting of the central executive of the Timaru Girls’ Interhouse Sports Association, satisfaction was expressed with the sports held on November 24. Fifty girls were selected to go into a short period of training for the New Zealand meeting, from whom a final selection of 10 would be made before Christmas. Preliminary arrangements for the New Zealand meeting were brought a step nearer completion. It was arranged that a dance be held in the Bay Hall on the night of the New Zealand fixture. A letter of appreciation was sent to the Timaru Rotary Club for its donation of a cup for the highest aggregate points.
