GERALDINE RIVER EROSION

Protection Of School Property

Education Board To Share Expense The protection of the secondary school property along the banks of the Waihi River is to be undertaken by the Geraldine Ccunty River Board. The Canterbury Education Board's contribution towards the cost will be £5O. Erosion had been serious along this river frontage resulting in a portion of plantation being washed away, the engineer to the Board reported. He had approached the school committee and suggested that when the bulldozer was in the vicinity something might be done to effect protection, providing the Education Board would bear the cost, estimated at £5O. An inspection was made by the Education Board’s overseer who approved this proposal. It was now' estimated to cost £BO to £lOO. Some of the work would be of benefit to properties lower down and also to the Wilson Street bridge. It was considered that a contribution of £5O from the Education Board would be fair and reasonable. Manual Training Pupils attending the Geraldine District High School next year will receive manual training three days a week instead of one only as at present. This was reported at a meeting of the Geraldine District School Committee. Mr P. M. McKenzie was in the chair. A staff report stated that a successful function had been organised and resulted in a satisfactory sum being raised for equipment for the model office at the school. It was agreed that the school I eakup should take the form of a . arty at the secondary school in the afternoon and at the secondary school in the evening when all the school work would be on display. Change Of Weather Coming as a relief to farmers, rain fell at Geraldine yesterday afternoon and increased into a steady fall. As well as the farming community, home gardeners welcomed the change of weather from the dry north-westers which have been parching gardens and burning off lawns. Personal Mrs J. G. Grierson, Raukapuka, has returned from a visit to Dunedin.
