TEMUKA HEALTH STAMPS
Successful Day Profitable Drive For Funds A successful marching contest and concert organised by the Temuka Health Stamp Committee was held in King Street yesterday when a large crowd gathered. Twenty-three teams, all in distinctive costumes, were assembled by the marshals (Messrs J. L. Menzies, G. H. Bowie and C. Stanley) and in turn marched over a measured distance. At the conclusion, the teams returned in massed formation, making a colourful display which gained generous applause. Music was supplied by the Temuka Municipal and Highland Pipe Bands. The judges were Warrant Officer W. Andrew and Messrs J. Worthington and J. Denvir, who commented on the high standard of marching. The teams had been even and had to be judged on fine points in order to separate them.
Following were the placlngs: Temuka Young Women's Basketball Club 1, United (Timaru) 2, Athletic II (Timaru) 3, Athletic I (Timaru) 4, N.Z. Insulators A 5, Girl Guides A 6, St. Joseph's Basketball Club 7, Y.W.C.A. (Timaru) 2, Temuka A.T.C. 9, Timaru Boys’ Brigade A 10.
At the completion of the contest, a concert was held In the Elite Theatre which was filled to capacity.
During the interval, the Rev. W. Wisdom, chairman of the Health Stamp Committee, thanked all who had assisted and announced that as a result of the concert nearly £6O worth of stamps had been sold. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris) con-, rratulated the teams on their work and thanked the Timaru teams for their support. Mr C. W. Browne, secretary of the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee, considered that Temuka had set a high standard in the function and appealed to everyone to support the health camp movement. The concert programme was as follows: Display of Health Stamps; short play, Life Boys; Irish jig, Miss D. Fairbrother and Master B. Bruce; violin solo, Master Ken McDonald; swimming display, Mrs W. Tait; double sword dance. Misses F. Hedley and E. Larcombe; skipping dance, Miss B. Parkes; sailor’s hornpipe, Master B. Bruce; vocal solo, Mr M. E. Eagle; acrobatic display, St. Peter’s Sunday School children; piano trio, Miss Coral Hawkey, Master Billy Hawkey and Mr Hawkey; dialogue, Misses E. Fitzgerald and D. Pitt; Irish reel, Misses E. Larcombe, M. Smail, F. McNichol and B. Boardley; piano accordion trio Messrs L. Perham, E. Edlln and S. Duggan; camp fire songs by Girl Guides. Upham Scholarships
The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) has invited Temuka, in common with the other districts of Canterbury, to subscribe to the fund for the establishment of the Upham scholarships for the benefit of children of fallen or disabled servicemen. . War Memorial As a result of a decision made by the Temuka Borough Council, a meeting has been convened to consider the erection of a suitable war memorial. Town and country districts have been invited to assist. Tennis Representatives The following will represent Temuka, Geraldine and District Association at Timaru to-day:— Men: Barclay (Park), Stevens (Geraldine), Hislop (Geraldine), R. Brenton (Geraldine Flat). Women: Mrs Nicholas (Park), Miss Ives (St. Peter’s), Mrs Charles (Geraldine Flat), Miss Findlay (Geraldine Flat).
