POSTAGE STAMPS

Peace Commemorative Issue (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. A peace commemorative series of New Zealand postage stamps was expected to be placed on sale on March 1 next, said the Acting Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) to-night. The series would consist of 11 denominations ranging from a Id to 1/-. "The stamps have been highly commended by all who have been privileged to see them,'' said Mr Jones, “and considered to do full justice to the great occasion they are intended to commemorate.” The 9d stamp, depicting the world famous view of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier as seen through the chapel window of the church at Waiho Gorge, was probably the most outstanding of the series. The 1/- denomination incorporated in its design the national memorial campanile, Wellington. as a symbol of remembrance o' those who sacrificed their lives in both world wars. The 8d denomination was another fine stamp with a design based on the representation of the stained glass window of the memorial hall of Wellington College, which might be regarded as doing fitting honour to the Services and the devotion of-youth in the nation’s cause. A descriptive booklet was being prepared by the Post Office and a limited number of firstday covers would be provided.
