LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mayor’s Benevolent Fund.—The Mayor 'Mr A. E. S. Hanan) is in receipt of a cheque for £125, being part proceeds of ‘Our Lucky Cat” Art Union, toward the Mayor's Community Benevolent Fund.

Welfare Fund.—The Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) received yesterday from the principal 'Miss V. F. Townsend) and pupils of the Timaru Girls’ High School the sum of £25 as a further contribution to the post-war welfare fund.

Loading Resumed.—The loading of the Blue Star freighter Empire Falkland which has been idle at Auckland since Monday was resumed yesterday morning after a special meeting of the Watersiders’ Union. An official of the union said the decision was made on the understanding that the Waterfront Control Commission would reopen its investigation of the dispute as promised.—P.A.

Wallaby Go'es South.—Don Bradman, the Mayor's young wallaby, no longer disports in the Timaru Park. His new home is Queen’s Park, Invercargill. Mr Hanan made a gift of the wallaby to the Invercargill City Council, and Don Bradman went south to his new home by train this week. He was met by the Invercargill Superintendent of Reserves (Mr B. P. Mansfield) and members of the reserves staff, who are making a home for him near the oriental lake in Queen's Park.

Typewriters on the Way.—Although up till now typewriters have been almost unprocurable in South Canterbury, dealers anticipate that within the next six to eight weeks there will be a supply of portable and standard size machines. A Timaru dealer said yesterday that it would be at least four months yet before supplies of same makes came to hand. Secondhand machines were almost unprocurable, but he anticipated that these would be more plentiful in the near future.

Red Cross Shop Day.—The president (Mrs L. R. Jordan) and the committee of the Timaru Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society last night expressed satisfaction with the result of their shop day yesterday, the £3OO raised being £7O more than last year’s figure. In the past badges have been sold on the streets on the annual shop day but this year's effort was confined to sales tables and competitions, individual returns being, produce £23/10/-, white elephant stall £2O, flowers £27/10/-, sewing £7O and raffles £159.

Corvette Due.—The New Zealand corvette Arbutus is expected to arrive at Auckland this afternoon. She is commanded by Lieutenant Nigel Blair, R.N.Z.N.V.R.. and is returning from special duty with the British Pacific Fleet. Arbutus is the second New Zealand ship to come back from service with the British Pacific Fleet. The first was Achilles, which more recently sailed for Tokio, and next will be Gambia. The date of her arrival is not vet known. Arbutus is a sister-ship of Arabis, and both were given to New Zealand by the United Kingdom Government.—P.A.

Labour Celebrations.—Next month will mark the completion of 10 years of Labour Government in New Zealand, and at a meeting of Labour supporters in Timaru this -week- a celebrations committee was set up and plans made to celebrate on a large scale. A social gathering has been arranged for October 26 to open the celebrations; a gala day for children will take place on December 1 and the celebrations will conclude with a ball. The president of the Timaru Labour Party (Mr J. Oliver) said yesterday that the Timaru Celebrations Committee felt that Labour supporters would welcome the opportunity of demonstrating their allegiance to the Government that had lifted them from depression to prosperity.
