NEED FOR HOUSES
Waimate And Fairlie Shingle Available For Concrete (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. When the estimates for housing construction were under consideration in the House to-day, Mr D. C. Kidd (National, Waitaki) presented claims for more houses in Waimate and Fairlie, in both of which districts he said there was an acute shortage of accommodation. He understood that the Department had land available. As there was a shortage of timber, he wondered whether the Minister had considered the question of building in concrete. In those districts, any amount of good shingle was available for the concrete block type of construction. The Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) said that the Department had certainly explored the question of concrete construction. There were several systems and he had been hoping to get on with construction work at speed but then the Department had run into the cement problem. The Department intended, however, going on with concrete construction.
