Timaru Men Welcomed
Arriving in Lyttelton by steamer express last evening South Island members of the Strathmore draft front Italy and the Middle East entrained for the last stage of their journey home. The 111 men whose next-of-kin reside in South Canterbury were on the first train -which passed through Timaru shortly after 1 o’clock this morning. A second train went through after 2 o'clock. To extend an official welcome to each of the men the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) and Mrs Hanan and the president of the South Canterbury R.S.A. (Mr A. Bell) Joined the train at Orari. There were 77 men for Timaru, and in spite of the hour there was a crowd of relatives and friends on the station to greet them. The Timaru Highland Pipe Band was present and provided musical honours. Transport to their homes was provided by the Red Cross transport section and other drivers under the control of Mrs F. Chapman. Another party of South Canterbury men is expected to arrive in Timaru about 9 o’clock to-night.
