CAVITY APPEARS

Crater In Ruapehu (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 29. A cavity has appeared in the floor of the crater of Ruapehu. It occupies more than three-quarters of the area of the boulder-covered tholoid, which replaced the crater lake some months ago. It has been described by Mr A. Manson, a guide at, the Chateau who visited the crater shortly after the cavity developed. The centre of the bottom of the crater appeared to have caved in, he said. The hole was at least 200 feet deep, but rising steam blocked any extensive view of the inside. Where a month ago steam and ash issued from numerous separate vents, now a huge smoke column has belched out from a “crater within the crater.” The caving-in apparently resulted from an explosion in the lava pipe. Early this month the crater floor was observed to be normal, but three days later the cavity was there. Activity was quiet while he was there, said Mr Manson. There were no explosions and no ejection.
