Patriotic Quota Although hostilities have ceased the local Patriotic Committee hopes to complete its quota for the current year as it realises that much money will be reenfired as New Zealand will have to provide for her servicemen in occupied countries. A donation of £5 5 - from Mr H. D. Muir leaves only £2 15 - to complete the quota of £350. School Excursion A partv of 20 pupils from the District High School in charge of the headmaster, Mr W. G. Bennett, is at present on an excursion to Dunedin. A comprehensive programme of visits to factories and places of historic and educational interest will provide the children with a good foundation for work in social studies and allied subjects.

Young Fanners’ Clubs The South Canterbury Young Farmers' Clubs held a debating contest in the Pleasant Point Town Hall. Mr P. Temple, chairman of the South Canterbury District Committee, explained that the debates were held to select a club to represent South Canterbury against the best Mid-Canterbury club, the winner to compete against the winner of the North Canterbury area. The first debate was “That the individual farmer can more readily improve his position by lowering his production costs than by securing higher prices for his produce.” The Cannington Club, taking the negative, won from the Waihaorunga Club by 253 points to 223. Those taking part and the points gained by each speaker were: Cannington: H. Squire (leaden, 83pts, A. Darling 88pts, R. Malthus 82. Waihaorunga: A. D. McKenzie ileaden 87pts, J. Hurst 71, and W. Burnie 65. T’he second debate held between the Pleasant Point and Geraldine Clubs was “That large farms are more profitable than small farms.” Pleasant Point, taking the negative, won by 257pts to 238pts.
