WAVE OF CRIME

Sweeping Berlin <7.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. A crime wave of staggering proportions is sweeping Berlin where the dregs of Germany are concentrated, says the correspondent of the “Daily Mail.” The police, who are mostly untrained recruits, are unable to cope with the widespread activities of criminals. Cases of manslaughter, blackmail and theft are mounting hourly. There were 123 cases of manslaughter last month and 2483 of housebreaking and robbery, while in the British sector alone last week there were 372 crimes, including three murders. The correspondent adds that the number of suicides is rapidly increasing, more Berliners taking the favourite German way of severing arteries in the wrists. Many of them arc women who were no longer prepared to face hunger privation and the danger of attack.
