TRAGIC LOSS

U.S. v Heavy Cruiser (7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 14. The navy announced that the heavy cruiser Indianopolis was recently lost in the Philippines from enemy action. All aboard, totalling 1196 officers and men, were casualties, including 875 missing, 316 wounded and five dead. The Indianopolis was lost shortly after completion of a high speed run from San Francisco to Guam delivering essential atomic bomb material. The Navy gave no details, though it was stated that the vessel was lost after safely delivering the cargo.

The Indianapolis sank in less than 15 minutes within 450 miles of Leyte. It is believed that two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine struck her without warning.

The Navy stated that the Indianapolis was lost in the Philippines Sea.

It was revealed that the Indianapolis previously had been the victim of a suicide plane off Okinawa on May 31 when serving as Admiral Spruance’s flagship. The damage was severe. The Naval spokesman scouted speculation that the warship was lost as the result of radio activity from atomic material, but obviously there must have been a tremendous explosion to account for 100 per cent casualties.
