WOOL STORE FIRE
Building And Machines Destroyed Fire early yesterday morning gutted, a building and destroyed part of another in the wool scouring works of W. Taylor and Co., Ltd , Saltwater Creek. The Timaru Fire Brigade fought the flames for seven hours before getting them under control. Besides damaging about 2000 bales of wool, the property of the Imperial Government, the fire destroyed a drying machine valued at £lOOO and a wool press costing £5OOO. The buildings and plant were partly covered by insurance, but it is not known if the wool was insured. In response to a telephone call from the night watchman at 4.32 a.m. the Timaru Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, said Superintendent E. W. McCann. Two engines and a trailer pump were brought to bear on the fire in the store, which was well alight. An adjacent building and a dwelling were threatened, but were successfully isolated and saved. The engines pumped water for seven hours.
Ihe nightwatchman said the fire spread with great rapidity, but he did not know its origin.
