Horticultural Society
A decision to hold a tulip show in October was made at a meeting of the committee of the Waimate Horticultural Society. Mr A. F. Palmer presided at the meeting, at which correspondence was received from the Timaru Horticultural Society. The meeting decided to place an exhibit in the Timaru Society’s show during Horticultural Week in February, 1946.
At the close of the meeting two talks were given by Mrs A. Grant and Mrs A. G. Pitts oh tulips and roses respectively.
Mrs Grant spoke of the origin of tulips, going back approximately 200 years and telling the audience of the progress made in tulip culture down through the years, culminating in the beautiful blooms produced by growers to-day. Mrs Grant gave some advice on tulip culture, including the treatment of the small bulbs attached to the parent bulb, and methods of dealing with disease. Mrs Pitts, who also has had a wide experience in horticulture, dealt thoroughly with the subject of roses. She explained the preparation of soils, and told her .audience how and when to plant, how to prune the different types of roses, spraying for different diseases, and finally spoke of the best types of roses to grow.
