MAIN TELEGRAPH LINES
Underground Cables Suggested (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, July 27. A reference to the suggestion that as damage or destruction had occurred to overhead main telegraph wires, they should be replaced by underground cables to obviate the ever-recurring break in communications due to snow and stormy conditions, was made by Mr J Acland (National, Temuka) in a notice of a question to the PostmasterGeneral (the Hon. F. Jones) in the House of Representatives to-day. He also asked whether the Minister would give consideration to the use of Army or other radio equipment to restore in some measure, during the present emergency in the South Island, an adequate means of communication. Mr Acland said the restoration of normal telephone communications in certain districts in the South Island would not be completed for some time.
