SLAUGHTER OF JEWS

Some Recent Estimates Appalling figures have been released giving the results of the Nazis' attempts to exterminate the Jews in Europe. Hungary has fared best. It has 250.000 surviving Jews out of a former total of 440.000. Most of them, especially some 50,000 who returned from abroad, are completely destitute. Pre-war Poland's Jewish population was 3.000,000. To-day it is estimated at between 80,000 and 90.000, but, of these, the number of Polish Jews is only 50,000. the remainder comprising men and women who were sent to extermination camps from other parts of Hitler's Europe and who managed to escape death. The Jews of Holland suffered proportionately greater losses than those of any other Allied country in Western Europe. The most optimistic reports estimate that only about 25.C.J survived out of a pre-war Jewish population of about 150.000. Nino thousand Jews who had married nonJews were permitted to remain in Holland, but were compelled to undergo sterilisation, and several thousand others escaped deportation by hiding with non-Jewish friends. Data as to surviving Jews in Germany are still incomplete. Out of 90 000 in Berlin, before the war, the Rus-.ian-appointed burgomaster announced recently 6'ooo survived.
