SUDDEN DEATH

Rev. Father E. C. Hoben, S.M. The Rev. Father Ernest Cormac Hoben. S.M., M.Sc., A.R.1.C.. viceRector of St. Bede’s College, who died on Monday was a well-known figure in Canterbury athletics. On Sunday he was snowballing with the pupils. Early in the evening he took suddenly iff. and was taken to hospital, where he died within a few' hours. Born in Wellington in 1903, Father Hoben began his secondary education at St. Patrick’s College, but came to St. Bede’s in 1920, when that college was opened. In 1921 and 1922 he was dux of the college, as well as being member of the First XV and the First XI. Returning to Wellington, he continued his studies at Victoria College. Ordained in 1929, he taught at St. Patrick’s College. Wellington, and St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream. In 1935, he obtained the degree of M.Sc. with honours, and a year later became an Associate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry. In 1942. Father Hoben returned to St. Bede’s as a master, and under his coaching the college First XV and its field athletes quickly improved. Father Hoben was a keen and energetic member of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association,
