PLEASANT POINT TOWN BOARD

Building By-laws To Be Framed The following members attended the monthly meeting of the Town Board. Messrs M. Maze (chairman), F. Agnew, M.’Patrick, J. Friel, C. Cook and L. Craythome. The chairman outlined the suggested additions to the Town Hall as a WaiMemorial. It was decided, in view of these additions, that no action be taken at present to install a septic tank, for which the sanitary inspector (Mr G. Satchwell) forwarded suitable plans. A local resident forwarded a protest against the proposed erection of a planing machine near his residence. After discussion, it was decided that no action be taken as at present the Board has no by-law to prevent the erection of any building. As a similar type of case was discussed at a previous meeting, it was - decided to proceed with the drafting of a suitable set of by-laws covering the erection of buildings within the Board's area.

A complaint was received from a stock firm concerning the culvert on the saleyards road. Mr Friel undertook to interview the property owners concerned with the object of effecting a better run-off for surplus water. Thanks were expressed to Mr E. A. Gillies, who had carried out repairs at the Town Hall free of charge.

Saieyards Bridge

Light traffic is now able to pass over the low-level bridge which was completed by Cook and Sons yesterday. Many people in the Waitohi and Kakahu areas are greatly handicapped when the main bridge is not passable, and the district feels grateful to Cook and Sons who so readily made available their experience and machinery to the Levels County Council with the result that a temporary bridge was constructed in a very short time.

Patriotic Committee

Final arrangements for the South Canterbury tug-of-war championship to be held at Pleasant Point were made at a meeting over which Mr M. Maze presided. Mr L. G. Hoskin reported that in spite of the big prizes offered the entries did not come up to expectations, and it seemed to him that the programme would have to be modified. On his suggestion it was decided to confine the tournament to one evening.

Mr M. Patrick reported that the Sideshow Committee had its arrangements well in hand. It was decided to ask the Women’s Institute to organise and run a produce stall for the function. Miss A. Maze was appointed supervisor of the supper arrangements. Tire chairman thanked those present who had contributed so generously to the funds, and expressed a hope that the remainder of the quota, £l4O, would be obtained to-morrow.
