VICTORY LOAN

£17,000 A Day Needed South Canterbury District The progress of the War Loan will have to be speeded up if South Canterbury is to maintain a position of honour on the Dominion list, as the district has dropped to seventh place. To obtain the objective set, £595,000. more than £250.000 remains to be invested during the remaintag 16 days, or about £17,000 a day, double the daily average of £B4OO invested so far this week. It is remarkable the sacrifice that some of the poorer members of the community are making. Yesterday, a widow, who is supporting herself and three children on an income of £3/10/a week, purchased two £1 bonds and apologised for her inability to purchase them from the canvassers who called on Tuesday as she was visiting in the country. To-morrow a busy day is anticipated in the monej’ order office in respect of transferring money from Post Office Savings Bank accounts into National War Savings accounts, bonds and Government stock, as no interest is lost by effecting the transfer on the first day of the month. Following are the investment percentages to date at the various offices in South Canterbury:— St. Andrews 65 Timaru 59 Geraldine 58 Temuka 54 Pleasant Point 53 Fairlie 48 Cave 47 Waimate 45 Albury 37
