CHINESE OUT OF FOOCHOW
Battle Outside City
CHUNGKING, May 17. Reinforced Japanese drove the Chinese out of Foochow on Sunday after a two-day battle, but bitter fighting is continuing outside the city. The correspondent of the United Press states that the American-trained and equipped Sixth Army, which fought in Burma, is now in China forming the backbone of the new streamlined Chinese forces. The Sixth Army includes troops which won battles at Myitkyina and Bhamo and also helped the spearhead drive shattering the Japanese hold on North Burma. The force was flown back to China several months ago. with complete equipment, including artillery and pack animals. The Chinese High Command admitted the withdrawal from Foochow following attacks by Japanese reinforcements brought un from the coast. The Japanese suffered 1000 casualties in fighting 55 miles west of Paoching. where enemv resistance was crushed.
