KUROW Shooting Season
In spite of the excellent prospects, bags were only moderate for the opening of the game season, limit bags being the exception rather than the rule. Ducks were very wary on Lake Waitaki, and did not decov as well as in previous years. Possibly the dull, foggy weather kept the game downriver, but reports from various parties indicate only fair shooting in spots which usually provide limit bags. As was expected, Lake Waitaki was very popular, and it is hoped the shooting will be better this week-end, as more ducks have been noticed on the lake during the last few days. W.E.A. Classes The paper selected this year for study is “Modern Japan.” This is a topical subject and the chairman, Mr J. B. Winefield, expressed the opinion that members would find the course both interesting and instructive. Several books have been recommended and these will be available to those who wish to make a deeper study of Pacific problems, which will be of vital importance to New Zealand when the war has been w-on. Euchre Parties The euchre parties which proved so popular last year have been started again in Kurow. The Civil Servants conduct these card evenings which are held weekly in the Memorial Hall. Proceeds are in aid of the Soldiers' Parcel Fund. Personal There was a very large gathering of relatives and friends in the Hakataramea Hall when a party was held in honour of Mr Jack Dunstan’s twentyfirst birthday. Guests numbering w r ell over 100 were present from a wide area, and a very pleasant evening was spent in dancing and cards.
