METHODIST WOMEN MEET

Missionary Convention At Timaru Members from all parts of the South Canterbury district attended the fourth annual Methodist Women’s Missionary Convention held in the Wesley Hall, Timaru. A welcome to the visitors was extended by Mrs W. H. Avery. The morning session of the convention was opened by the singing of a hymn followed by prayer. Greetings were received by telegram from the Dominion President. A "talk was given by Mrs Avery, who chose as her subject “Ye are the light of the world.” A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Hocking for her services as correspondent secretary. Auxiliaries forwarding parcels to the Sisters were advised to enclose addressed post cards for replies. Satisfactory Finances The quarterly financial report was presented by Mrs Darling and showed a satisfactory position, the receipts totalling £ll3 14 2. The morning session was followed by Communion Service conducted by the Rev. J. Richards, assisted by the Rev. W. H. Avery, who led in the Lord’s Prayer and the Beatitudes. The precommunion address was delivered by the Rev. O. Burnet, who spoke on the words “Bread of Life.” The Misses Lili sang a duet. The afternoon session was opened by Mrs Osborne, a hymn being sung, followed by scripture reading and prayer. The welcome was extended to all auxiliaries by Mrs Hanan. Educational Session After a song by Mrs Horsely, Sister Marion Campbell spoke on “Nehemiah.” In the educational session, Mrs Smart dealt with the activities of “Home Sisters,” Mrs Darling discussed the duties of “Depot Manager”; the subject of Mrs Hocking’s question was “Gleaning,” while Miss Brown dealt with the “Kurahuna School” and Mrs Burnet gave a talk on stamps. Mrs Burnet suggested as a special objective for next year a recomendation for the re-establishment of the girls’ school in the Solomon Islands be made. Concerning representation to conference it was decidecj to postpone discussion until the District Council meeting, on whether or not they be selected in alphabetical order. After a reading by Mrs Richards the convention was closed by the Benediction.
