TEMUKA GOOD PROGRESS MADE

Repairs To Streets And Bridges Wide Area Affected By Flood Good progress has been made with repairs to streets and bridges in the borough necessitated by the recent flood. Although full use has been made of all the borough plant and of additional labour, because of the wide area affected and the extent of the damage in certain localities, most of the repairs are of a temporary nature. Amongst the work necessitated by the flood was the replacement of the inlet manhole and 60 feet of pipeline at the west side septic tank, extensive repairs to the Wilkin Street Bridge and the resurfacing of 150 chains of shingle roads. Surface patching will be required on a number of sealed roads and footpaths on the west side of the town, the cleaning of outfall drains, repairs to fences and footbridges, removal of shingle deposits in the creek bed, and the building of a number of protective groynes. Material for filling washouts at the Wilkin and Shaw Street bridges was obtained by arrangement with the Public Works Department. A mechanical loader and three trucks were made available and 626 yards of shingle were carted for this purpose. Extra transport was employed for two days to clear streets and facilitate road surface patching. The switchboard and the starter mechanism at the borough screening plant was submerged during the flood and reconditioning has been carried out by the South Canterbury Electric Power Board. No damage occurred to the bin structure. Numerous trees were washed out and fences damaged at the sanitation reserve plantations. At one time it was thought that extensive damage had been caused to the main west side sewer in High Street, but an inspection bv the Borough Foreman (Mr T. Devine) showed that the subsidence was due to underground scouring and the sewer itself was not affected. No damage or interruption to the water supply occurred. Presentation To Soldiers A presentation to four employees of N.Z. Insulators, Ltd., who are now members of the Armed Forces, was made during the dance given by the Social Club in the Parish Hall. The manager (Mr T. N. Lovatt). in handing each of the men a presentation from the staff of the factory, wished them good luck. Private Story replied on behalf of the men. The men honoured were Private J. T. Story, W. S. Milne, W. Jackson and H. A. W. Valentine. There was a good attendance at the dance. Extras were played by Aircraftman F. Weir and Mr V. N. Lovatt was M.C. Easter Marriages Easter is always a popular time for marriages, and eight marriage licences were issued by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Mr S. G. Heffernan) during the month of March. Although marriage licences are valid for three months after date of issue, it is seldom that they are taken out very far ahead of the actual ceremony. Four of the marriages took place in Temuka on Easter Saturday. Tyres And Tubes The same allocation of bicycle tyres and tubes has been made for the Temuka and Geraldine districts for April as for the previous month. Owing to the Easter holidays, the monthly meeting of the Tyre and Tube Rationing Committee has been postponed till April 10, when applications will be considered and permits granted for the 220 tyres and 160 tubes allocated to the district. Personal Mr H. Grocott. who has been supervisor at the Temuka Post Office for the last three years, retired on superannuation on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Grocott will leave for a short holiday at Akaroa this morning.
