HARVEST CAMPS
Every Available Man Engaged Continued Demand Expected
Every available man in the Army harvest camps at Smithfield. Oran. Fairlie and St. Andrews was en-
gaged in harvesting work yesterday, and with a continuance of the present warm weather it is expected that the demand for men throughout the South Canterbury district will be exceptionally great. The harvest camp at Waimate will open to-day. and that at Temuka to-morrow.
This information was given by Captain J. C. Williams, who is in chai 6 e of the harvesting zone xrom the Rangxtata to the Waitaki. “The men throughout the South Canteromy zone are mobile, and can be switched trom one camp to another to meet local demands,” said Captain Williams. “Everything is done to make the fullest possible use of the men available, and farmers can assist materially in the planning of the scheme by getting their applications for Army labour in early. These applications can be cancelled in the case of weather conditions making the time applied for unsuitable to the farmer, but in order to permit the men to be transferred to another camp, at least a day's notice of cancellation is necessary. It is only with the full co-operation of all farmers that the scheme can function with the maximum efficiency.”
