TEMUKA HEALTH STAMPS

Increase In Sales District Organisations Assist

Since the reorganisation of the Temuka Health Stamp Committee a keen interest has been taken by the various organisations in the Temuka district in increasing the sales of stamps, and the effect of this enthusiasm is seen in the large increase of sales. From the beginning of the campaign in October to the end of last week sales amounted to £172/10/- compared with £llO for the full five months during which the campaign was conducted last year. Sales of stamps from the table in the Post Office lobby were suspended for the Christmas period on December 16 and resumed last week, when £B/10/worth of stamps were sold. The present campaign will close on February 28.

The following women’s organisations assisted in the sale of stamps up to December 16:—Temuka Women’s Institute, Library Committee, Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Ladies’ Section Returned Services’ Association, Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, and the Methodist Ladies’ Guild. When the campaign resumed last week, the sales table was conducted by representatives of the: Temuka branch of the Red Cross Society. A schedule has been drawn up for the five remaining weeks of the campaign and the ladies from the following organisations will assist: —Temuka Basketball Club, St," Peter’s Ladies’ Guild, St. Joseph Ladies’ Committee and the Temuka Musical Society.

“It is anticipated that the goal of £2OO set at the commencement of this campaign will be reached without any difficulty,” said the Postmaster (Mr 8. G. Heffernan) yesterday. “The method adopted of making sales from a table in the post office lobby on Tuesdays and Fridays has proved most successful. The sales tables have been staffed by representatives of the various women’s organisations represented on the committee, each organisation being responsible for sales during one week. Sales have continued steadily throughout the whole period of the campaign. A few health stamps are sold over the counter at the post office, but the majority of sales are made from the special table. The continued interest of the district organisations participating is most encouraging, and the support given by the public shows that the purpose of the stamps in providing finance for children’s health camps is understood and generally appreciated.” Abnormal Growth Owing to intermittent wet weather It has not been possible to complete the seasonal grass mowing on streets and playgrounds, stated the report tabled by the foreman (Mr T. Devine) at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Borough Council. The result is that abnormal growth is in evidence over most of the streets. Progress is now being made with the work and it is proposed to concentrate on cutting the grass before undertaking any major works. Final notice has been served on a number of property owners to clear sections and trim fences, stated the report. As numerous sections in various parts of the borough are affected, it is desirable that some action be taken to enforce the Act. The continued breach by some owners naturally encourages others to follow the example set. It i,s proposed to carry out an inspection of the borough for this purpose in the near future. If some way can be found to have this matter cleared up, it will assist in creating a much desired improvement in the general appearance of the town. When the report was adopted by the Council, it was suggested by members that legal action be taken against those ratepayers concerned, but after discussion it was decided to forward a final letter giving them 14 days to comply with the provisions of the Act. Army Harvest Camp The telephone has been installed at the hostel in the Temuka Domain m readiness for the arrival of the Army harvest unit to-morrow. There will be 30 men in the unit, including drivers and cooks. Twenty-five men will be available for engagement by farmers.
