Newly-Elected Republican
The newly-elected Republican Senator for lowa, Governor Bourke Hickenlooper, thinks his “outlandish name" helped him beat his Democratic opponent, Senator Guy Gillette. The former made a point of telling jokes against himself at his political meetings. One of his stories was about a deaf old lady who asked him his name. He told her it was Hickenlooper. She kept asking him to repeat it, and finally gave up in despair. “It still sounds to me as though you are saying Hickenlooper.” Another story the Republican Senator is fond of telling is that he used to believe in the old-fashioned habit of carrying a bag of asafoetida round his neck as a remedy against colds. One day he went into a chemist’s to buy some of this and told the man to put it down to his account. The chemist was indignant. “Look here,” he said, “you can’t expect me to write out ‘asafoetida’ and ‘Hickenlooper’ for 10
